DETROIT -- Volkswagen plans to sell its Polo small car in the U.S.



VW development chief Ulrich Hackenberg said the automaker plans to sell the car in the U.S. to take advantage of American buyers' increasing enthusiasm for smaller, fuel-efficient cars.



"The small-car segment is the fastest growing segment in the U.S.,"



Hackenberg told Automotive News Europe at the Detroit auto show. "Oil prices will rise again and that will drive small car sales up further."



VW has never competed in the subcompact segment in the United States. The smallest car it sells here is the Golf, also known as the Rabbit. The Polo would be larger than the Toyota Yaris, but smaller than the Honda Fit, says Volkswagen Group of America CEO Stefan Jacoby.



Jacoby says the Polo would be a "further alternative" to help VW meet its goal of more than tripling U.S. sales to 800,000 vehicles annually over the next decade. Once the economy begins to recover, oil prices will be more expensive than before the recession, Jacoby says, and VW has the "right products for that."



"With our European heritage, we are used to compact and subcompact cars. We are working right now to upgrade these cars for the American market," Jacoby said.



Volkswagen of America spokesman Jim Gill says he is not aware of a definite date for the Polo's U.S. launch. VW might test American reaction to the car at upcoming auto shows, he said.



"We are definitely looking at it and what would need to be done for it to be successful," Gill said.



Hackenberg said that U.S.-market Polos could be produced in VW's assembly plant in Puebla, Mexico. He did not say when U.S. sales of the Polo would start.



VW will debut its latest-generation Polo at the Geneva auto show in March.




The launch should come with the next generation Polo:

Great news! There are a few Polos running around Ottawa. very nice little cars.

Also once VW builds that TN assembly plant I am sure the price on these cars will drop.

A well equipped a Yaris or Fit is getting close to 20k these days.. If I can get a Polo for the same price, I rather get the VW

Si on se base sur le cout de la Rabbit, Jetta et GTI. Ça reste quand même compétitif. Le problème c'est qu'il y a beaucoup trop d'options qui gonfle la facture rapidement. J'espère que VW va offrir la Polo de base à un prix raisonnable et que les poules deluxes vont pouvoir ajouter la climatisation automatique et autre bébelles complètement inutiles pour une sous-compacte.



Tsé, on peut avoir une belle voiture stylisé sans toutefois avoir des options luxueuses à n'en plus finir. Une sous-compacte, ça doit être économique en partant.

I like the mkVI look, it really works nicely on this car, i hope this design translates over to the real thing once it comes to fruition

This weight/size class is really popular in europe, I saw a lot more polos than I saw golfs, which looked like immense gas guzzlers compared to the likes of fiestas, corsas, puntos, alteas, etc.

1. Where are the N.American version made? Certainly not Germany.
2. Are they bringing the diesel? If so, I found my next daily driver.

Moi aussi , à condition qu'ils règlent finalement leurs problèmes de fiabilité ( pas ce modèle spécifiquement , mais VW en général )

Rear picture







For Europe, this is the plan for now, expect diesels as well:



1.4-litre supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder TSI, which will grace the Ibiza Cupra early in 2009. This produces 178bhp and 250Nm of torque in the GTI, and gives a 0-60mph time of around seven seconds and a 140mph top speed.



What will make the car fun to drive will be the way its power is delivered. The combination of turbo and supercharging means there will be a broad spread of torque at low revs, with muscular urge continuing all the way to the red line. The engine’s small capacity will also translate into strong economy and CO2 emissions. Figures of 40mpg and less than 150g/km are expected.

As with the Cupra, the GTI gets a six-speed manual box as standard, with a fast-shifting seven-ratio DSG box an option.

C'est la Polo GTI qui possède véritablement l'âme de la Rabbit GTI originale ! Pocket rocket !

D'ailleurs selon moi, question marketing, La Golf aurait dû rester la Golf, et la Polo aurait dû être la Rabbit.

C'est tellement RIDICULE a quelle point elle est belle....Evidement avec toute les options comme mentionne elle risque d etre un peu hors prix a compare avec les autre sous compactes mais quand meme...Ca change pas le fait qu'elle est ecoeurante...La version un peu plus de base doit surment plus accessible. Et selon vous un 1.4 turbo va t il prendre du super et avoir une consommation digne de la categorie??C 'est evident que ca va couter plus cher de gaz qu une yaris mais ca doit etre negligeable!



Peu importe, jai VRAIMENT hate d en voir ici parce que c'est quelque chose RARE cette polo north america...
